When do I need an Aircast Cryo Cuff for my Knee?
The Aircast Knee Cryo/Cuff combines the therapeutic benefits of controlled cold compression to minimise hemarthrosis and swelling and reduce pain.
After a twist, turn, arthroscopy, or minor or major surgery the Aircast Cryo Cuff for the knee is the ideal rehabilitation tool. The cuff is anatomically designed to completely fit the knee providing maximum coverage of the whole joint and allowing the whole surface area to have the continual cooling benefit of cryotherapy.
After an injury, blood vessels are damaged, allowing blood cells and fluid to seep into spaces around the joint, resulting in swelling and bruising. When ice is applied the temperature decreases and constricts local blood vessels, slowing metabolism and decreasing fluid build-up, ice can also numb nerve endings, reducing the transfer of impulses to the brain that register as pain. The Cryo/Cuff System reduces the need for multiple ice packs in the freezer and is great for medium to long-term use.
The cuff needs to be attached to the Gravity Aircast Cryo Cuff Cooler or the Intermittent Powered Cooler and will hold water and ice needed for six to eight hours of cryotherapy. The durable cooler comes with a tube assembly and insulation disk and simple-to-follow directions for use. Many hospitals use the cryocuff system and will send you home with the single patient use cuff which is why we offer the cooler on its own.
The difference between the gravity cooler and the powered cooler is that the powered cooler has a lid with an air compressor. Once the cuff is filled the compressor will create a 30-second on/off cycle offering Intermittent Compression (IC) and creating a massage effect over the affected limb. This can aid in the reduction of pain, removal of swelling and increase circulation to aid in the speed of recovery. Any gravity coolers can be upgraded but the IC lid and power supply will both be required.
TOP TIP for using the CryoCuff System
Adding ice to the water will make it colder and more effective. As a tip, get a couple of large yoghurt or margarine tubs and fill 2/3 full and place them in the freezer to use as ice blocks. These blocks will cool the water and remain for hours so will last for several refreshes of the water in the cuff and save you constantly making ice cubes!
The tightness of the knee pad does not change the effects of the product.
