What is a Guedel (Oropharangeal) Ariway?
An oropharyngeal airway (also known as a Guedel airway or an OP Airway) is a rigid plastic implement used to maintain an open airway.
When do I use a Guedel (Oropharangeal) Ariway?
Oropharyngeal airways are indicated for unconscious patients because it prevents the tongue from slipping back and either partially or completely obstructing the airway. Oropharyngeal airways come in a variety of sizes, from infant to adult.
How do I find the correct size Guedel (Oropharangeal) Ariway?
Using airways effectively requires selecting the correct size. A small airway can be blocked by the tongue or obstructed by the epiglottis, compromising ventilation. Conversely, a large OPA may cause trauma to laryngeal structures or induce laryngospasm. The proper size is determined by two key facial measurements: from the maxillary incisors to the angle of the mandible, and from the corner of the mouth to the angle of the mandible.
